Webinar: The Basics of Mobile Language Learning: Foundations and Opportunities
Abstract
Mobile language learning is not a new concept, but its potential has never been more exciting. As technology evolves (for example, artificial intelligence is added) and our students’ changing habits mean that they increasingly engage with content on the move, mobile tools offer an ever-expanding set of opportunities to make language learning more flexible, engaging, and personalised than ever before. In this session we will cover different conceptions of mobile learning and how these conceptions may influence our practices. We will consider some learning theories that can inform mobile learning pedagogy. Then, focusing in on mobile assisted language learning (MALL), we will review its general scope and examples of applications. We will think about mobile language learners and their needs, before moving on to some principles for designing mobile language learning experiences and noting the metacognitive skills that learners could develop through MALL. The overall benefits and limitations of MALL will also be considered and how to ensure that students have safe and rewarding learning experiences. Finally, we will look at how teachers can support one another when they are experimenting with MALL.
