About the Workshop
This PCI will train attendees to effectively integrate Artificial Intelligence (Al) into their teaching. Attendees will explore cutting-edge tools, techniques, and pedagogical strategies to create effective and engaging language learning experiences for their students, as well as tips and tricks for reducing their administrative workload. Time will be given for attendees to work on courses they are actually teaching with the trainer and in small groups.
The workshop will be divided into six modules, described below.
Introduction and Theoretical Frameworks – participants will review the evolution of Al and gain a foundational understanding of the different Al technologies available currently. Ethical considerations related to Al integration will also be explored, ensuring responsible and ethical use in the classroom. This session will also focus on the technology integration frameworks SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition) and TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge). Participants will learn to adapt and apply these frameworks to their ESL/EFL teaching context, enabling them to effectively leverage Al technology to enhance language learning.
Selecting and Evaluating Al Technologies – participants will develop the skills to critically evaluate and select appropriate Al technology tools. They will determine criteria for assessing the quality and effectiveness of each tool, empowering them to make informed decisions that align with their instructional goals. Participants will explore pedagogical strategies and techniques for creating engaging and interactive learning activities utilizing Al tools. They will also learn to prioritize accessibility and inclusivity to ensure all students benefit from tech-enhanced learning experiences.
Differentiating Instruction with Al Tools – this module will focus on how participants can use Al technologies to tailor instruction to individual needs and support personalized learning pathways for learners who need different types of educational support. Key Al technologies, including Natural Language Processing (NLP), chatbots and adaptive learning will be introduced. Participants will gain skills in creating personalized language-learning instruction and tools for both learners who are above and below the average level of ability in a given classroom.
Creating “Presence” with Al Tools – this module will focus on using Al tools in combination with the Community of Inquiry (COi) model established by Garrison et al. (1999). This model focuses on three types of presence: Social Presence, Teaching Presence and Cognitive Presence. Participants will learn how Al technology can be leveraged to enhance the “presence” in each aspect of the COi model.
Assessment and Feedback with Al Tools – participants will focus on the use of Al tools for improving assessment and providing personalized feedback to learners. Both formative and summative assessment will be considered. The module will emphasize the importance of performance-based assessments and designing assessments so that there is no fear of students utilizing Al tools to cheat. Participants will also learn how to streamline the way they provide feedback to learners using Al tools.
Collaborative Learning Environments with Al – with more learning moving into online settings where learners often feel isolated and apart from their “classmates”, collaboration is an essential component of a successful learning experience. This module will focus on integrating Al tools to allow for seamless collaboration with peers and instructors. The use of Al tools for improving ideation and brainstorming, team building, accountability, team member engagement, and team efficiency will be discussed.
